Reflection: Comprehension Skills

We have covered several comprehension skills (reading, inference, summary, vocabulary), as well as had a comprehension test.

1) Did you perform up to expectations for this comprehension test? What were some difficulties you encountered in the test?
2) Which comprehension skill do you think you are weakest in? Why?
3) What can you do to improve the skill?

  1. 1) I did not perform up to expectations for this comprehension test. I did not really understand the passage and it was hard for me to do the grammar as it was my first time doing this new format of grammar which is different from primary school's.

    2) I think I am weakest in inference questions and summary. It was hard to read between the linesto look for the answer. Even if I know the answer, I did not know how to express it.I am weak in summary as I did not understand the questions. Sometimes, I am worried that I pick up the wrong point, which is actually the correct point. It is also hard to rephrase the words and phrases as my vocabulary is really bad.

    3) I can start by doing more comprehension text. I can also read more books to improve my vocabulary skills.

  2. 1.)I did not perform well for this test as i expected to get at least 23 marks but i got 17 in the end. I did not really understand the passage and this is my first time trying to use one word to replace another so i had some difficulty .

2.)I think that I am weakest in writing answers with evidence. Some of my answers are either not related to the passage or there is no evidence from the passage for my answer.

3.)I can try to find evidence before writing the answers and read more storybooks to improve my grammer.

  3. No,I did not do well for my comprehension test.I don't quite understand what the passage is talking about. The grammer thing is also so hard.I also don't know how to do.
I am weakest in inference questions,
vocabulary.I don't know what the words in the passage means ,that is why I do not understand the passage. There are so many questions asking why.I do not understand the passage ,so I don't know how to do some.
I can improve my vocabulary skills by reading storybooks and I will pratice my comprehension skills by buying 'comprehension' books to do and I can pratice on my inference questions.

  4. No, I did not do well for my comprehension test. I had most difficulty in the grammar portion of the test. I must do well for the Mid-Year examinations which is just round the corner.
I am weakest in inferring all the passage. I can only infer part of it. I have to try and read the passage more properly next time.
I am also weak in my grammar. My grammar is atrocious. I must try to improve it.
I can improve my grammar skills by reading more storyboks and do more comprehension practices. I must also work on my inferrence skills.

  5. Yes, I performed up to my expectations for this test but I think I can do better because there were many careless mistakes made, but I did not spot them when I was checking my paper. I faced some difficulties such as: I could not spot the grammer mistakes and I cannot think of any word to rephrase when I was doing the comprehension. I think that I'm weak in summary skills because I find it very hard to find other words to replace the original sentences as well as rephrasing sentences. I can read more guide books and do more practice on summary skills to improve on this skill.

  6. -Yes, I have performed to my expectations for this comprehension test. I encountered problems when I was doing section B. I do not know which one is right or wrong, hence I do not know how to correct. It is so different from the ones I did when I was in primary school where they would underline the words for you and ask you to correct it.

-I am weakest in summary writing and vocabulary. When I am writing the summary, I will tend to write more than what is expected, which bothers me a lot. Sometimes I also do not know which the points should I include in the summary and which should I not as this may affect my marks. I am also weak in vocabulary, so I would always panic when I saw some new words in the passage which I do not really know the meaning.

-I will do more summary writings in my assessment book to improve on it. I will also read more books and check up on the dictionary about the meanings of the words which I do not know.

  7. No.
I did not do well for my comprehension test.
I had most difficulty in re-phrasing the sentences that i wanted to write.
As I cannot copy exactly everything from the passage.
I always do not know/have difficulties in re-phrasing the sentences.
I think i can improve my weak point by doing more of comprehension exercises.

  8. I think I had performed up to my expectations for this test as I did not expect to score so high for my section B. I had indeed faced some difficulties as my gammar and spelling were not strong, causing me to scan the passage repeatedly in order to find out the mistakes. I also had some difficulties rephasing the words in the passage into my own answers.
In all my comprehension skills, I think that i am weakest in summary and ansering inferance questions as i always misunderstood the questions they asked us or just could not gather the main points together and make it into my own unique answer.
I believe the saying,"practise make perfect" so maybe the english teacher can gives us more worksheet to do on editing, summary and answering inferance questions.

  9. 1) I did quite ok for my english comprehension. I did not expected it so high, but actually not high, it is like just meet my expectations. As i am weak at my vocabulary skills, i had difficulty rephrasing those sentences/phrases. I also have difficulty understanding parts of the story as there was too much characters confusing me.

2)I am weak at my vocabulary skills because i seldom read storybooks.

3)Although i dreaded reading storybooks, i will try to at least read one page per day. Some storybooks' story are real boring. So if i do not like to read storybook, i could read something more interesting that is NEWSPAPER!!!

  10. reflection:
yes,i have perform up to my expectations for test.i do not have much difficulties in the comprehension passage.i got quite low marks for my grammer but i think that it is because i am careless.i think that i am quite weak in vocabulary and reading.i have to read a text a few times before i am able to get the gist of the text.i am not able to find the meaning of some complicated words sometimes.i have no idea on how to improve my skills.

  11. I did not perform up to expectations for the test. I had some difficulty doing inference questions.
I think I am weak in inference questions and summary because I was not familiar with the words and I could not identify the topic sentence or main idea of each paragraph and summarise them.
I can practice summerising any piece of story. I can also do more comprehension practices to work on my inference skills.

  12. I did not perform up to expectations for this comprehension test. The difficulty is that I did not really know what skills to use for each questions. I think that the comprehension skill that I am weakest in is summary. I do not really know what to pick up exactly the sentence for the summary and putting them into my own words. I can improve by doing more summary questions like those in the English practice book.

  13. 1.Yes, i met my expectations for comprehension but not for the editing portion of the test.It pulled my marks down greatly. The editing portion was a new experience for me, in my primary school, we had underlines for the words we were suppose to replace. Anyway, secondary is not primary school so i did better not expect much...
2.I am weakest in inferance questions. I was not able to identify the topic sentence correctly.
3.There is much room for improvement, i will do more comprehension queastions on inferring. That way, i can improve my level of inferring.

  15. 1) Yes, in fact, i did better than I expected I would, but I had some difficulty in doing the inference questions. The passage was a bit confusing so I had difficulty understanding parts of the story.
    2) I think I am weak in inference questions, as I am not able to indentify the topic sentence and main idea accurately. I sometimes have to read a text a few times before I am able to get the gist of the text.I am also definitely weak in summary,as I am often not able to summarise a whole passage into the minimum requirement of words. I do not know how to find appropriate words to replace phrases and often spent a long time just to summarise a paragraph and I do not really know what to pick up exactly the sentence for the summary and putting them into my own words.
    3) I will do more comprehension practise on inference questions and try to improve by doing more summary questions like those in the English practice book. That way, i can i[rove my level of inferring and summary skills.

  16. i think that my standard is still not up to expectations.I scored most badly for editing as my grammar and vocabulary are very weak.During the test, i had difficulty in trying to understand the meaning of some sentences and trying to identify the mistakes in the passage for editing section. Among all the skills that Mr leong has taought us,i am weakest in inference questions and summary.I often fails to identify the topic sentence and main idea.I also cannot find the exact word to substitue the word in the sentence.I will try to brush up my grammar skills by practising more often and also read more books to help me improve my vocabulary.

  17. 1) Did you perform up to expectations for this comprehension test? What were some difficulties you encountered in the test?

No,i did not perform up to expectations in the comprehension test,at least not up to my own expectations.I encountered some problems in the comprehension test for every segment. Like, for the grammar test,i had problems with idendifying the mistakes.

    2) Which comprehension skill do you think you are weakest in? Why?

I think i am weakest in doing inference questions. Some inference questions are hard to spot out the answers from the passage.

    3) What can you do to improve the skill?
Do more questions on inferences and also read more books so as to familiarise myself with the right grammar.

  18. I did not performed well in my comprehension test as I only passed by only 1 mark. I have many grammar mistakes and I always miss out some words. I think that I am very weak in summary writing as I could not find the points for the summary and I sometimes miss them out. I can read more passages and try to find out their main points or read the passage more times.

  19. i didn't think that i did the comprehension test up to expectations as i almost failed it.I have trouble trying to find the mistakes as i will tend to speed read and miss out on the mistakes.I think myweakest comprehensiion skill is summary writting as it is hard to combined all the points into a word limit.Sometimes i don't even know which are the more important points so i will use more words.I might want to try and summarize each story i read and get the gist.

  21. I think I did quite badly as I barely passed. I think at least i know where i have difficulties in for example my inference questions. I am not really able to explain in my own words. I think taking out the main points and summarizing is the hardest parts.I can't seem to know which are important and i think my vocabulary is too low. I should read more books to increase my range of words i can use.

  22. ₪ I definitely did not perform well on this test.i had difficulty understanding the passage.

₪ I think i am weakest in inference questions as well as summaries as i have a weak vocabulary so i am not very sure how to replace some words, phrases or sentences with my own.i also have problems finding the main points of the story and understanding them as well.i should also improve my grammar as i am also quite weak in it.

₪ i should practice summarising passages and also read more newspapers or books then copying down new words, then look them up in a dictionary.i should also do some grammar exercises to improve my grammar.

  23. 1. I did not perform up to the expectations as I did not quite understand what the passage is about. There was also some questions that I went blank when reading it.

    2. I think I am weakest in is vocabulary. I cannot really find out the meaning of the word upon reading it. Some of the words I can roughly get the meaning but mostly it is totally nothing.

    3. Maybe I can read more books and when I come across a difficult word, I can look up the dictionary.
