Unresolved Conflict in Catherine Lim's "Monster"

We have learnt that an unresolved conflict must be developed properly. Let us determine how Catherine Lim develops the unresolved conflict in “Monster”.

Work in groups, and do the following:

  1. Which 2 characters have an unresolved conflict?
  2. Describe the unresolved conflict.
  3. Explain the unresolved conflict (how come these 2 characters cannot get along?)

  5. 1)Karen and Old Grandmother

2)Karen wanted to get rid of old grandmother's bed, however, the grandmother wanted to keep her it as it had sentimental value, but the grandmother was admitted to the hospital before she could solve this.

3)Karen did not want to give one of the room to Old Grandmother as the Old Grandmother is useless to Karen as she is sick and cannot take care of her children. The old grandmother was stubborn and refused to let Karen throw away her things, even though they were infested with bugs and vermin. Thus, they did not respect each other and could not get along.

  8. Why can't Karen and the grandmother get along?
The grandmother wants to keep the bed as it is very precious and has sentimental value to her as she has already had it for 60 years but Karen thinks it is very unhygenic as wants to throw it away. Maybe Karen thinks the grandmother is very unreasonable,it is also maybe because of a lack of communication due to a age gap. Possibly, they could also be not getting along well as they speak a different language, for example, the grandmother speaks hokkien and Karen speaks english.

  9. 1)The two characters which have an unresolved conflict are the grandmother and Karen.
2)We do not know whether the grandmother and Karen will get along well after the bed is sold.
3)Now, Karen and her grandmother cannot get along because of the monstrous bed in her semi-detached house. Karen has a dilemma whether to keep, throw or sell away the bed, as it is infested with bugs and flith which had affected the rest of the family

  12. Character- Driven Explanation:
    3) Karen and the grandmother probably could not get along well as there is an age gap and very little communication between the two as the grandmother(quoted from text) rarely went out of her room.

  13. 1) Karen and old grandmother.
    2) They were always arguing about whether to throw her bed away. Whether old grandmother's bed is being thrown away still remains a mystery.
    3) Karen does not understand the sentimental value of the bed and the two of them cannot get along well.
